An Generosity of People We Don't Know: How a Person I Only Just Encountered Assisted Me Land the Role That Transformed My Existence

During the closing decade of the 80s, I was embarking on a budget travel adventure to the European continent with a travel partner. Since my companion was interested in pursuing a master’s degree in NYC, we had planned a fortnight visit there en route to London.

We reached the postgrad residence, a big 10-storey building on the Upper West Side named International House. Setting down our luggage, we headed straight to the canteen, where we picked up meals, sat down, and began chatting with fellow residents.

Adjacent to my seat was an individual of Iraqi origin enrolled in an engineering program at an Ivy League institution. He wanted to know what I did, and I explained that I had newly finished with a scientific background and had been performing experiments with electron microscopy.

He pointed out that there was an electron microscope unit at the institution – close to the school of engineering, which was how he knew about it. He recommended that I ought to seek a role with them. I laughed it off, telling him that I was soon departing to Europe and, even more importantly, I did not possess a US visa.

The following day I toured the city, going back to the cafeteria that evening. The Iraqi student came up to me and informed me that he had arranged an interview for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Since he had made the arrangement, I attended the interview – but right away told my interviewer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was probably wasting her time.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a city where opportunities abound – she said: “We'll handle it. When can you start?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I worked there for three years. One of the benefits was that I also received complimentary education at Columbia, and I seized the chance to finish a master’s of international affairs.

We didn't cross paths after that and I don’t even know his name, but his selfless gesture altered my destiny in multiple respects. I lacked the confidence or nerve to reach out at an Ivy League university and ask for a job. And, I had consistently hoped to take classes in another country, but lacked the financial means without that tuition waiver.

Critically, that gig at Columbia resulted in a position in Switzerland where I met my handsome spouse from France, with whom I now have four wonderful sons and daughters. That encounter altered everything. That kind stranger changed my trajectory in life, and I’m always appreciative.
